Electronics - Checklist for Backpackers

Posted by Nick on March 7th, 2011 and filed under Electronics | No Comments »

If you are unlucky your expensive iPod can end up broken because of an electric spike. You can also find yourself unable to recharge your cell phone because the wall socket is different from home. Follow the below checklist to avoid these and other pitfalls:

Cell phone + charger
Recharge your phone before you leave. Enter important phone numbers in the phone book (embassies, insurance companies etc).

SIM-card for your cell phone
You can get local SIM cards in your destingation which may be cheaper than using the SIM card from your home operator.

Alarm clock
Maybe you have alarm functionality in your phone or portable computer and do not need a separate alarm clock.

Fire alarm
here are combination fire alarm/alarm clocks you can consider getting.

Surge protector
To protect expensive electrical devices against power spikes.

Headphones
There are headphones called “noise reducing headphones”which can drastically reduce the ambient noise in e.g. airplanes. Do an online search if you are interested.

MP3/media player + charger + earphones
If you want to share music/video with someone else you can get an adapter which allows two people to listen to the audio at the same time. You can bring a DVD filled with movies and exchange files on your media player during your trip if you have a small memory card (if you have the legal rights).

Empty CD/DVD + CD jewel case/memory stick
The jewel case is used to protect CDs with backups of your pictures. You can also put the photos on a memory stick.

Cassette adapter for car stereo/FM transmitter
Looks like a normal cassette/tape with a cord which attaches to your media player. This enables you to use normal cassette players in car stereos to listen your media player. An alternative is to get an FM transmitter to attach to your media player (note that these may be illegal in some countries). Great for long drives.

Video game + charger
Portable video game system. You can bring a DVD filled with movies and games and exchange them during your trip if you have a small memory card on your game system (if you have the legal rights).

Miniature speakers
Great to share music with others.

Torch (flashlight) + batteries
A small one which you always carry around in your pocket or purse is very useful, you never know when you might need it.

Headlight + batteries
Attaches to your forehead and keeps your arms free.

Voltage converter
If your equipment runs on another voltage than in your destination you need a voltage converter. Some chargers are multi-voltage.

Adapter
If the electrical sockets in your destination are a different format than your plugs.

Calculator
For currency conversion.

Camera + camera charger + memory card + carrying case
If you have room you can put a small plastic bag in your camera carrying case which you can use to protect your camera in case it rains.

Iron
For those who want to look their best.

Hair dryer
I guess it is one of those girl things :)

GPS + GPS maps + charger
To easily find your way around.

Batteries and charger
Get rechargeable batteries and battery charger or buy batteries in bulk to save money.

USB-cable or card reader
In order for you to be able to attach your camera to a computer for uploading pictures and to connect your mp3/media player/video game. There are different types of USB-cables; make sure you have one which fits your device.

Happy travels!

Electronics Enclosure Systems

Posted by Nick on March 5th, 2011 and filed under Electronics | 2 Comments »

When looking for an electronics enclosure system, there are a number of qualities that one should consider. Look for a company that serves a diverse customer base, both domestic and international. Make sure the enclosure and console systems are used in a wide variety of applications, such as test and measurement, information technology, POS (point of sale), security, telecom, datacom, military, industrial process control, network operations, call centers, and trading rooms. A company that works closely with customers from the beginning to the end of the sale shows the dedication of that company. Through planning, designing, manufacturing, and installing, one should be able to see that the customer’s needs come first. A team of knowledgeable experts should be on hand to help find the perfect enclosure solution for the customer’s specific requirements.

There are a number of services that a company can provide in order to show its customers that it really does care about them and their satisfaction. When searching for an enclosure system, look for a company that offers custom enclosure design to meet specific requirements. A multi-functional team will meet to provide quality design, manufacturing, and planning to the project. A company with imaging service will be able to provide a 3D view of configurations incorporating perspective, color, material, and light so one can see what the final product will look like before it is installed. Other services to look for include quality project management, and reliable delivery service, offering multiple options for one to choose from.

An enclosure system should allow a workstation to perform solidly relative to its function, and also offer esthetically superior style and design. If both objectives can be accomplished with one design, that solution is the most acceptable. As interests and styles change throughout the years, system designs have had to adjust as well. Many buyers now prefer the clean look, overall functionality, monitor mounting flexibility, and the cost savings and convenience associate with a pre-assembled unit. Some units may arrive that are not pre-assembled, requiring time and additional parts in order to assemble the unit. Finding a company that provides pre-assembled units increases both function and convenience. Buying a pre-assembled unit can also offer some reassurance that the unit will be put together with quality, sturdy construction. If the price is right, this is the right choice. Along with pre-assembly, units should also go through as few vehicles to get to the site as possible. Some companies change trucks and drivers often during shipping, while quality companies will keep these changes to a minimum, allowing less chance of damage. The unit should be shipped from the factory directly to the job site.

Although there are many items to look at when choosing an electronic enclosure system company, customer service is one of the most important. A company should be open, ready to respond to questions and concerns, and be available to address those questions and concerns at any time. A good customer service group will make the purchasing experience much easier and allow one to feel more at ease with the whole process. Choosing a company that meets all of the above requirements may seem difficult, but they do exist, and are ready and willing to accept your business.

Consumer Electronics Show

Posted by Nick on February 28th, 2011 and filed under Electronics | 2 Comments »

As tech players big and small gear up for the annual International Consumers Electronic Show in Las Vegas, they all hope that what happens in Sin City starting Wednesday, ends up in your living room.

This week, the world’s biggest gadget extravaganza kicks off, and thousands of technology companies are expected to show off their best, brightest and (sometimes) most bizarre.

The Consumer Electronics Association, which sponsors the industry tradeshow, expects it to draw about 2,500 exhibitors and 110,000 attendees from around the world. While that attendance level is consistent with last year’s, it’s still below the 141,000-plus tally from 2007 and previous years.

The prospect of watching live, local TV shows on mobile phones and other portable devices is getting closer. Manufacturers this week are showing off gadgets that can receive a new type of digital TV transmissions.

“Mobile DTV” gadgets will be available this spring for consumers in the Washington, D.C., area to try. The devices include a cell phone made by Samsung Electronics Co. and a Dell Inc. laptop. There’s also the Tivit, a device about the size of a deck of cards that receives a TV signal, then rebroadcasts it over Wi-Fi so it can be received by an iPhone or BlackBerry.

Television makers plan to roll out 3-D sets

This is supposedly the year 3-D television becomes the hot new thing: Updated sets and disc players are coming out, and 3-D cable channels are in the works. But it’s not clear the idea will reach out and grab mainstream viewers.

Besides having to spring for expensive new TVs, people would have to put on awkward special glasses to give the picture the illusion of depth. It’s one thing to put on 3-D glasses in a theater, but “at home, you’re with other people in the living room, running to the kitchen and doing other things,” said Greg Ireland of the research firm IDC.

Unfazed, the biggest TV makers began revealing their 3-D models at the show. First up was LG Electronics Inc, which said it will introduce 47-inch and 55-inch flat-panel TVs with 3-D capabilities in May. LG plans a 3-D Blu-ray disc player sometime later.

Tim Alessi, director of product development at LG Electric USA, said 3-D models will likely cost $200 to $300 more than comparable flat-panel sets.

Either way, the future looks very bright overall for the electroncis industry.

Electronics Consumer Appliances : Destination Dubai

Posted by Nick on February 26th, 2011 and filed under Electronics | No Comments »

The rising interest of customers, manufacturers and suppliers in Dubai has made it one of the hottest destinations for the export and import of electronics consumer appliances. This all happened because the rapid market saturation around the globe, especially around the western countries did not seem to be stopping.

The rapid shrinkage in European markets forced the European and American manufacturers to look for a safer ground. Dubai turned up as the leading contender in this rescue act. It provided them enough opportunity to establish firmly an already shaking business.

The rising income per-capita in UAE, thanks to its oil exports and well-devised liberal market policies, made Dubai a battle ground for the leading manufacturers of electronics consumer appliances. Firstly, the Japanese manufactures and suppliers took a complete control over the consumer appliances market in Dubai.

However, the current situation seems to be favorable for European and American manufacturers. They have filled up the shelves of Dubai malls with their products. Definitely, they have proved better in the marketing management. Their customer-luring strategies have worked.

According to a report, the current electronics consumer appliances market is well set to see a skyrocketing growth of 28-30% in this year of 2008. This unbelievable rate of growth will be more accelerated in coming years.

Since 1971, when UAE came into form, this country, especially Dubai has been the most important hub for the international buyers. Initially, the customers from countries like India, Sri Lanka, Iran, Pakistan and many African nations etc invaded this market. Most of them used to work in Dubai. They bought appliances to take them back home.

Basically, they bought audio & video systems and household appliances. The trend is still on the rise as the numbers of workers from that part of the world is increasing day by day.

Apart from these Asian consumers, the people from Europe and America too have developed craze of buying electronics consumer appliances in Dubai. Definitely, they get those stuffs cheaper by 10-20%.

The Dubai market boasts to have the best collection of consumer appliances produced by the best manufacturers in this world. Hence, the tourist from all around the globe love to hang out here not only to see the glassy skyscrapers and the glittering sea beaches but to explore the finest market, probably, in the world.
